Other than these two main series of measures on species and areas, the SPAW Protocol also includes a certain number of transversal measures, including:
- the setting up of impact assessments in the event of projects and activities liable to have an important effect on the environment;
- the possibility of exemptions from the Protocol’s requirements in the case of traditional activities;
- the principle of listing protected areas and species for the SPAW, developing technical and scientific research on these areas and species, and exchanging information amongst the Parties with regards to their research or monitoring programmes and, as far as possible, the coordination of these programmes.
- Finally, the protocol establishes the principle of concerted elaboration of measures, criteria and guidelines corresponding to these different objectives.
