Found in all the seas of the world except the Arctic Ocean, there are 7 species of sea turtles in the world. Their appearance in our waters dates back more than 150 million years. Today, 6 of the 7 species are listed on the Red List as threatened species, while the status of the Flatback Turtle Natator depressus remains unknown due to lack of data.
The waters of the Antilles and Guyana are frequented by 5 species of marine turtles out of the 7 found worldwide: Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), Green turtle (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea).
Among these 5 species, 4 frequent the beaches of these territories to nest: the leatherback turtle, the hawksbill turtle, the green turtle and the olive ridley turtle.
